Happy Easter!
Yesterday we caught a tram to Delft. It was Easter Saturday and no real estate agents were answering the phone. Delft is very cute and charming with canal lined streets, a big town square and magnificent churches – hundreds of years old (I can’t remember how many hundreds but I know it’s lots). I didn’t take my umbrella and got pretty well drenched, a cold nose and purple hands. There are no awnings in Holland – it’s BYO shelter or bad luck. We took refuge in a warm cafe on a canal and ate croquettes and frites with mayonnaise (is this low fat?). The cafe had prints of Jan Vemeer paintings on the wall. The artist lived in Delft in the 17th century and the painting View of Delft is one of his most famous. We saw this pain
ting at the Mauritshuis in the Hague last Sunday as well as Girl with the Pearl Earring. The tourist shops sold the ubiquitous blue and white Delftware and I bought a cheese slicer with a blue painted handle however Sean forbade me to buy anything else as we are still living at the hotel and I have already bought quite a few books and a new handbag (but I needed them all).
Last night we had dinner with two NSW police colleagues of Sean’s who are also working over here. We found another nice street for restaurants – Denneweg- in the city centre. Denneweg is like a film set, it is so perfect and quaint. The street itself seemed so quiet but once you open the double doors to a restaurant or bar it’s vibrant and happening. Then this morning we had breakfast in Scheveningen at the beach at a place called Toff’s with the same guys, and some more Australians. It feels as though we are being looked after by our countrymen and women. We had fish, cheese, doughnuts, cakes and pastry for breakfast – no lunch today. All the restaurants and cafes we have been all have their own decor and ambience. This one was posh but
comfy with lots of cushions, upholstered bench seats and indoor furnaces. Touristy Scheveningen had a lively carnival feel to it with roving musicians and even though it was rainy, cold and windy we hung around for a bit.
We have been doing way too much eating out (unavoidable when you are staying in a hotel) and are craving healthy food like muesli, apples, broccoli and carrot sticks. Sean is also yearning for a news bulletin. It must be hard for someone who likes to watch the news 3 times a day at home to get by on nothing. He’s tried to watch the BBC but they focus on London news, traffic and weather. Last night while channel surfing he stumbled upon “World’s Strongest Man” in Poland and that held his attention – a new interest perhaps?
